Current position as of 0000 UTC July 17th is 37° 30’ N 153° 11’ W Current Heading: 330°M Total distance made good (DMG) = 1103 nm DMG last 24hrs (0000UTC-0000UTC) = 104 nm Engine hours = 0 Avg true wind speed (TWS) = 10 kts Avg speed over the ground (SOG) = 4.5 kts Avg swells = 2.5 ft Recap of Day 12 The diffence a day makes is astonishing, today we put the genoa back at as the winds eased up some and the wind waves subsided a little. The majority of the wind was still North or Northeasterly and we kept altering our heading to keep as much northing as possible, and alter use of Dan our trusty windvane and the electronic auotpilot to steer us through the variable conditions. We had winds anywhere from 4 – 14 kts every few minutes and solid cloud cover, both of which were most likely from the cold front passing overhead. It is always good to look at our weather charts and have them match what we are seeing on the spot, the synoptics we had showed the high pressure ridge was now heading Southeast and we were out of that and hoping to get North and find the westerlies around 40 degrees latitude but miss the gale above us. We expect decent weather with summer in full swing the lows are north and move at a very fast 45kts while the highs are much slower at around 5kts and tend to be what slows us down when you end up the the middle or the edge of one waiting for it to pass. Avoiding the middle is the main goal, generally that means very little to no wind and to avoid the engine hours we like to stay on the edges and ride the compression areas between systems. There does seem to be a lot of tight isobars above 40 right now so I think we will be in for some good winds once we arrive and if we are really lucky it will be anything but North and East. If anyone out there is having trouble loading our tracking page on our website you can always get the same information from one of our weather sources at forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/Varuna Until tomorrow, stay safe and thanks for the well wishes 🙂 Ty & Hillary
